are two opposite things. Often an opinion is considered a fact. It is important to understand the difference between fact and opinion. Do not let a news that turns out to be just an opinion instead be considered as a fact. How to distinguish fact and opinion?

Before moving on to the sentences of fact and opinion in English, try to determine which are facts and which are opinions from the following sentences.

1. He sang very well earlier. Indonesia became independent in 1945.

2. The sun rises from the East.

3. Rabbits are cute animals.

4. Finding a job is difficult.

5. Mathematics is an exciting subject.

6. The cube includes the shape of the space.

7. Semarang is the capital city of Central Java Province.

8. Indonesia needs great leaders.

9. Aceh was hit by a tsunami in 2004. Indonesia is made up of many islands.

Answer: Sentences of fact include sentences 2, 3, 7, 8, 10, 11, while the others are opinion sentences.

Understanding Facts

     (fact) is a statement about something whose truth can be proven objectively. The objective evidence can be in the form of research results according to the scientific method, physical evidence, or eyewitnesses.

Fact features:

• the truth is objective

• the truth can be verified

• based on research

• use words with unbiased meaning

Example of a fact sentence:

1. Yani has two sisters. (Yani mempunyai dua saudara perempuan.) 

2. Indri went to Surabaya yesterday. (Indri pergi ke Surabaya kemarin.) 

3. Typhus is caused by bacteria. (Tifus disebabkan oleh bakteri.) 

4. The Moon is the Earth natural satellite. (Bulan adalah satelit alami Bumi.) 

5. Rats are mammals. (Tikus adalah hewan mamalia.)

• Opinions

Definition of Opinion

     (opinion) is a person's view or assessment of something. An opinion can be identified by paying attention to the biased words contained in it.

Here is an example of biased words:

• very = sangat 

• fun = menyenangkan 

• good = baik 

• beautiful = cantik 

• handsome = ganteng 

• terrible = mengerikan 

• most = paling, kebanyakan 

• more = lebih 

• best = terbaik 

• clever = pintar 

• favorite = favorit 

• great = hebat, besar, bagus 

• delicious = enak 

 In addition, opinions can also be identified by paying attention to words that show ideas or thoughts.

Here's an example:

• think = pikir, kira 

• likely = kemungkinan besar 

• always = selalu 

• usually = biasanya 

• often = sering 

• sometimes = kadang-kadang n

• ever = tidak pernah 

• probably = mungkin 

• every = setiap 

• all = semua 

• should = sebaiknya

Opinion features:

• the truth is subjective

• the truth cannot be verified

• someone's handiwork

• use words with biased meaning

Example of sentences :

1. opini Math is the hardest thing to learn in school. (Matematika adalah hal tersulit yang dipelajari di sekolah.) 

2. Cat is the cutest animal. (Kucing adalah hewan paling lucu.) Your room is very clean. (Ruanganmu sangat bersih.) 

3. Indonesia is a big country. (Indonesia adalah negara yang besar.) 

4. I think Indonesia is a great country. (Menurut saya Indonesia adalah negara yang hebat.) 

5. Mr. Jordan is the best teacher. (Pak Jordan adalah guru terbaik.) 

6. My father is a great worker. (Ayahku adalah pekerja yang hebat.) 

7. English is hard language to learn. (Bahasa Inggris adalah bahasa yang sulit dipelajari.) 

8. Mala is very clever. (Mala sangat pintar.) 

9. Fried rice tastes delicious. (Nasi goreng terasa enak.)
